I Am Who I Am! And Still Becoming

I’ve come to accept that we don’t become who we are by chance. The person I am today is the result of a lifetime of experiences—some joy-filled acclaims, others marked by challenges, setbacks, and even out-of-control missteps. (That’s a polite way of saying, my stupidity!) Yet each misstep, each acclaim, each moment—has shaped me and continues to do so. This speaks not only to growth and resilience, but to an internal drive to keep moving forward, to learn, and to keep on keeping on.

I am who I am not because I have all the answers, but because I’ve learned to live in the questions—to pay attention to who I am today, and to continually examine, reflect, and seek a deeper understanding of the person I am still becoming.

Over the years, I’ve been a student of life—in factories and boardrooms, at hospital bedsides, at gravesites, in men’s circles, and within and around church life. Like most of us, I’ve worn many hats: spouse, parent, mentor, caregiver, and now, gratefully, elder. But true identity isn’t defined by titles, roles, or accomplishments. It is revealed in how we strive to live each day—with intention, with faith, and with love. And perhaps most importantly, in how we learn to forgive ourselves when we all fall short of our own internal arbiter—especially for painful missteps in the past.

Forgiveness is vital. Forgive others as well as ourselves, and live without the burden of carrying past baggage. And know this: God has already forgiven each of us. Yet forgiveness and repentance are inseparable—turning our hearts toward God, acknowledging where we’ve gone astray, and seeking to live differently. When we truly repent and accept God’s forgiveness, something shifts—it opens space for growth, courage, and even a rediscovery of our own voice.

There was a time I doubted mine. In my youth, I avoided English and literature classes—as a teenage know-it-all, uncertain of my place in the world. I barely graduated high school. Yet, in the unfolding chapters of my life, I was led—by grace, encouragement, and divine timing—into unexpected classrooms and sacred spaces where my “I” slowly began to take shape.

My teenage awkwardness eventually gave way to a deeper knowing and a quiet acceptance that I had something worth sharing with the world—my own small place in it all. Writing became my way of listening—to myself, to others, and mostly to God.

A dear friend once told me, “To choose is to live consciously—to be aware of the space we occupy in the lives of others, and to act in accordance with our best and most deliberate understanding of our place in the world.” That message struck a lasting chord.

I began writing, and sharing in earnest to stay connected during the pandemic, and I continue to write to reflect on who I am today, to share what I’ve learned, and to hopefully offer something of value—not to preach or persuade, but simply to offer: a thought, a truth, a hope.

I write buoyant thoughts to reach across the quiet spaces between us—to connect hearts and minds, to affirm that we are never truly alone, not in our challenges, our joys, or our doubts.

There’s a passage in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 that speaks to my intention: “Praise be to the God… who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

That, I believe, is at the heart of my writing today—not advice, not instruction, but the offering of comfort, clarity, and hopefully, a bit of shared light to brighten your day!

I also find deep meaning in scripture. Exodus 3:14, when Moses stands before the burning bush and hears God declare: “I AM WHO I AM.” There’s mystery in that statement—but also freedom. A holy permission to embrace ourselves as we are, even as we continue to grow. To say: This is who I am. And, through past trials and triumphs, I am still becoming.

There is more to come for each of us. And, each new day is a gift.

And I am still learning. Still striving. Still questioning. Still making mistakes—and each new day, still learning from it all. I am still becoming.

What motivates me today is the same spark that stirred me years ago: a desire to stay connected, to give back, and to make a positive difference. If even one sentence, one insight, or one shared memory lightens your load, brightens your day, or helps you see your own experience in a new light, then I have done something meaningful—and that is enough.

As C.S. Lewis once wrote: “We read to know we are not alone.” To that, I would humbly add: I write to know I’m connected and not alone.

And so, I write—with humility, with hope, and with a heart that believes in the goodness of others and the sacredness of our individual stories. I write not because I have arrived, but because I’m still walking—still discovering, still being refined by grace, still learning how to love more deeply and live more fully.

I am who I am—imperfect, grateful, and committed to living with purpose. I share not from a place of superiority, but from a wellspring of experience—forged by mistakes, shaped by faith, and burnished by time.

Each essay, including this one, is in its own way, a prayer. A reaching out. A reminder that truth, shared with humility, becomes a bridge, a spark—and sometimes, even a lifeline.

There is no single formula for a meaningful life, but I believe it begins with paying attention to what stirs your soul, to what makes your heart sing, and to the people and the angel-way-showers God places along our paths.

I write because I feel called to do so. And I continue because, through writing, I continue to discover more fully who I am and why I’m here. Gratefully, I continue walking the winding path of life toward my true essence, a more enlightened and sacred me.

Thank God, I continue to learn. And gratefully, my story is still being written.

The Sword and the Stone, a call of the heart

The Sword and the Stone: The Call of the Heart

The tale of The Sword in the Stone—woven into the fabric of legend—tells of a young, unknowing Arthur, who, by quiet strength of character rather than might, draws the sword from its unyielding resting place. In that singular act, his destiny awakens.

The sword was never meant for the strongest hand, but for the purest heart. For in truth, authentic power is never seized—it is revealed. Revealed by grace. Claimed in humility.

From the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers this enduring truth: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”— Matthew 5:5 (KJV)

Grace. Humility. Meekness. These are not isolated virtues—they form a sacred triangle of strength, shaping how we relate to God, to others, and to ourselves.

On the other side of the stone lies the illusion of the “strongest hand”—rooted in arrogance, egocentricity, and inflated self-importance. Left unchecked, self-importance becomes corrosive. It weakens friendship, erodes trust, and casts a long shadow over career paths and relationships. It’s an easy illusion to fall into—I know, because I’ve lived it.

The ego, like a cunning chameleon, cloaks itself in certainty and seduces us away from the simplicity of who we truly are. I reflected on this in an earlier essay titled The Illusionary Guise of the Panjandrum:

“In reality, the only genuine authority we possess lies within ourselves—over our own thoughts, actions, and choices. While this truth may seem elementary, our human tendency often skews our vision, tempting us to see others through a self-imposed lens of superiority. This distortion subtly, but powerfully, undermines our ability to connect.”

Jesus speaks directly to this: “Judge not, that ye be not judged.”— Matthew 7:1–5

His words are a call to humility and self-examination. We are reminded to first remove the log from our own eye before addressing the speck in another’s. For judgment, cloaked in self-righteousness, diminishes not only those we criticize—but ourselves as well. Instead, we are called to live differently. To choose a path illuminated by grace—to see others not through the lens of superiority, but through the lens of shared humanity. In doing so, we create space for connection and compassion.

“We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.”— Maya Angelou

In practicing non-judgment, we cultivate inclusivity, deepen our understanding, and grow in our capacity to celebrate one another’s uniqueness.

Beneath our surface differences, we all carry wounds. We all long for love, purpose, and belonging. We all seek the courage to transform fear into hope.

And in life’s brevity, there is urgency. The call to become beacons of light—acknowledging and uplifting the goodness in others, especially those burdened by loss, grief, or hardship. We are invited to forgive—ourselves and others—and to lay down the weight of what no longer serves.

For me, that lesson came early.

At sixteen, I was just a part-time stock boy, enamored with my first boss. He wore a suit, smoked cigars, and exuded success. In my young eyes, he was a superhero. I mimicked his confidence, mistaking image for essence. By twenty-two, married with two children and bills mounting, I took a job on the factory floor of a Chrysler plant. It was there—on the bottom rung of a massive organization—that I was humbled. My sense of self-importance collided with reality.

And yet, in that humbling space, I began to learn. I listened. I saw the good in others. I rose—not by power, but by grace. Not through force, but through humility. I climbed the corporate ladder not alone, but by drawing on the wisdom and support of those around me.

Some may say I pulled the sword from the stone. If so, it was not by might—but by meekness.

Let me be clear: I do not claim to possess greater wisdom or deeper knowledge than anyone else. I do not write to teach, convert, or convince. I write to share—to open a window into my heart and experience, in the hope that something here may speak to you.

Perhaps in these words, you’ll hear a familiar echo. Perhaps something will lift your spirit, affirm your path, or gently turn your gaze toward a new good.

That is my only aim. And in that, I offer this reflection with gratitude and love.

Re-awakening the Civic Soul

Please know that I purposely shy away from partisan wrangling, choosing instead to celebrate the human spirit and its boundless capacity for goodness. That same spirit animates the thirty-three essays in my new book, Reflections of the Heart, now available online.

Yet even a heart inclined to seeing the good cannot ignore the tremors in Washington, DC. Since January 2025 the current administration has introduced initiatives with such velocity that they have overwhelmed the time-honored rhythm of bipartisan review and debate. This torrent of change skirts the very guardrails designed to preserve both historic democratic deliberation and the purposeful balance of powers.

Rather than despair, this is the time for all Americans, no matter one’s political persuasion, to re-awaken our civic soul for the common good.

A Nation Stirring

Across the country a deeper engagement is rising—more than protest or partisan uproar, it is the heartfelt insistence that governance remain a partnership between leaders and its citizens. America’s standing as “leader of the free world” is now being challenged! Other nations are cautiously opposing US bullying and intimidation. Citizens from every walk of life are lifting their voices, urging government to rediscover its time-honored moral compass.

Thomas Jefferson reminded us, “The care of human life and happiness … is the only legitimate object of good government.” Public gatherings and spirited dialogue, though signs of disapproval, reveal democracy’s resilience, not its collapse, proving that freedom thrives in the chorus of engaged citizens who refuse to settle for anything less than principled leadership.

The Moral North Star

At the center of this renewed engagement lies an unchanging truth: every person is endowed with the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Government is the trustee of those rights, never their owner. When policy making outruns deliberation—or devolves into narrow self-interest—citizens are called to speak, not in anger, but with steady conviction.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assured us, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

President Barack Obama cautioned, “A government that cannot trust its citizens to make their own choices cannot itself be trusted.”

History shows the road to justice is seldom smooth, yet always worth taking. Our era is distinguished by an abundance of technological tools—digital platforms, community networks, instantaneous communication—that allow constructive voices to be heard without rancor.

Leadership as Service

Ethical leadership is not perfection; it is principled stewardship. Power held transparently and humbly nourishes trust and elevates the human spirit. Charters such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remind us that dignity is a birthright, not a privilege.

When any administration blatantly exhibits autocracy, time-proven democratic statesmanship resolutely responds with inclusivity —listening to historical voices, weaving unity from diversity. When policy is shaped by the wisdom of many, governance becomes an act of healing. Participation ceases to be merely a right; it becomes a sacred responsibility.

Stewardship of Our Common Home

In an age of ecological fragility, principled governance must reach beyond humanity. Earth-centered jurisprudence urges us to treat the planet not as property but as a living trust—bestowed by God, entrusted to us for future generations. Environmental stewardship is not merely green policy; it is love in legislative form.

Answering the Call

Yes, our system of governance is being uncharacteristically challenged. The glare of world attention is bright. The very foundation of our nation’s leadership role is suddenly on the block. But this is no time for despair—or for incendiary rhetoric that deepens divides. It is a moment for a renaissance of governance grounded in:

• justice for all,

• service over self-interest, and

• freedom paired with responsibility.

Plato warned, “The price of apathy toward public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.” Let us therefore lead with wisdom and courage, trusting in the essential goodness of every person—including those seeking refuge on our shores.

By holding firm to our values, speaking with grace and conviction, and demanding truth and integrity from those in power! By re-awakening our civic soul, we can help America regain her footing and reclaim and model a democracy that uplifts rather than oppresses.

A democracy that does the right things, the right way, for the right reasons. Where justice is prompt, dignity non-negotiable, and leadership synonymous with service. This is the calling of our time. We respond not as rabble-rousers, but as stewards of democracy’s enduring promise.

Michelle Obama’s counsel still guides us: “When they go low, we go high.”

Now is the time to resolutely re-awaken our American civic soul, and do so by going high!

The Kid Who Lived Down the Block

A world founded on inclusiveness, compassion, caring, and love.

The kids and I hope this finds you in good health and thriving! I crafted the “Kid” narrative to highlight what I consider four essential factors for the future health of humanity:

Addressing the tragic loss of life, especially the heartbreaking loss of young lives to war, domestic terror, or mass shootings. This represents a profound challenge to our collective human spirit. Each child lost or seeking refuge and is turned away embodies an unrealized promise for contributions to humanity and future generations that may never be realized.

Addressing the current hostility and division toward those seeking refuge in the U.S. raises the need for a poignant reminder that no matter who you are, all of our ancestors were once newcomers in search of a brighter future in The United States! Many went on to achieve unimaginable greatness.

Acknowledging whatever our beliefs, God gave each of us seeds of greatness! These seeds can only grow to fruition within an open society with education for all. A society that recognizes and embraces inclusiveness, compassion, caring, and love for all, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, skin color, or life choices, as reflected in our U.S. Constitution.

Addressing the paradoxical idiom that global thinking is important and the powerful truth that acting locally underscores local actions as the bedrock of global change. In essence, the state of the world mirrors the strength of our local communities and resolve, or the absence thereof.

These four items are vital for the well-being of the global community and future generations! Thank you for taking the time, and now, “The Kid!”

Seeking refuge, a young foreigner named Alexei and his family immigrated from a faraway country to a small town in America, bringing traditions and stories from a world unknown to us. With his quiet demeanor and keen observations, Alexei quickly became known to us as the bright foreign kid who lived down the block.

Despite his reserved nature, Alexei was bright. His mind was a fertile ground for ideas and dreams. He excelled in school and his intelligence shone through in every subject, but it was in his social studies debates that his passion truly ignited. Inspired by stories of justice and fairness, Alexei wanted to become a lawyer.

Years went by, and Alexei’s dedication to his studies never wavered. He attended a prestigious university, excelling in law courses, and eventually became a respected lawyer. His journey didn’t stop there. His fairness, empathy, and sharp mind led him to become a judge, a role in which he served with honor and dignity, always striving to ensure justice was well served.

Alexei’s journey didn’t end in the courtroom. His sense of duty and passion for justice propelled him into the political arena. He became a 41 member of the United States Congress, a position he used to represent his constituents and be a voice of reason for those who couldn’t speak for themselves. His colleagues respected him and his constituents loved him for his unwavering commitment to fairness and progress. But his story is not only a story of success. It’s a reflection of what is possible in a world where thousands of young people lose their lives each year to senseless killing. Humanity loses countless possibilities like Alexei’s.

Each of these children could have been a doctor, an artist, a humanitarian, a judge, a leader, or a voice for change. Their potential contributions to society, the advancements they could have driven, the lives they could have touched – all lost in the devastating ravages of conflict between unresolved differences.

Alexei’s journey from being a foreign kid who kept to himself to becoming a highly respected member of Congress mirrors what humanity can gain when peace prevails. It reminds us that within every child worldwide lies a universe of possibilities, and when we protect and nurture all young lives, we invest in a future of positive advancement for all of humanity.

Every child saved is a potential beacon of hope, a story of what can be achieved when we choose understanding over prejudice, love over hate, or peace over conflict.

Yet, all of this good is overshadowed by the somber reality of lives cut short. Each young soul killed or the kids not given asylum had the potential to leave an indelible mark on the world. They could have been the innovators who solved longstanding problems, the artists who inspired generations, the leaders who guided us toward a more harmonious future, or the compassionate souls who brought diverse local communities together.

For every young life lost, there is also a family in mourning, a community that suffers, and a nation that loses a part of its future. The impact of premature deaths sadly destroys families and leaves deep psychological scars. The ripple effects of these losses not only hinder the present generation but cast a shadow over the prospects of future generations.

Their loss is not just a tally of statistics but a profound loss of what could have been. This also highlights the incredible resilience and potential of those who overcome great challenges. It’s a testament to the power of embracing diversity and allowing every person to reach their full potential.

It also speaks directly to the importance of our US immigration system and its potential value to both the US and immigrants of all backgrounds.

However, this also serves as a stark reminder of the disparities in opportunities across the globe. While many have found a path to success, others are denied the basic safety and education to pursue their dreams. This inequality is further exacerbated in war-torn regions with short-sighted, self-serving, or demented leaders, where the very foundation of thousands of children’s futures has already been shattered.

We are all called to consider the broader implications of global conflicts abroad and at home and the importance of peace-building efforts as a crucial investment in humanity’s future. This is a call to action for all local, state, national, and international leaders to foster a world where every child, regardless of origin or circumstances, can reach their full potential and create a better world for future generations.

Very few of us have the opportunity to effect on a national or international scale. By the same token, we all have full control over what we do as individuals! Regardless of ethnicity, religion, or life choices, we can each stand as a model for others, enabling all within our local sphere of influence to live peacefully, flourish, and reach their full potential. This speaks directly to the oft-used phrase, “Think Globally, Act Locally.” I turn this around to acknowledge that Local Actions Drive Global Reality!

How can we each be more understanding and compassionate toward one another?

In conclusion, as we strive for peace, it is most important to acknowledge the profound impact each of us has in our local communities and each life can have on our shared human journey.

There would be countless more stories of innovation and progress in a world where all people have the opportunity to reach their full potential — a world founded on inclusiveness, compassion, caring, and love. The loss of young lives for any reason and each refugee turned away is a dampening of our shared potential and a loss of our collective future.❤️

Vibrant Eldering: A Sacred Season of Becoming Embracing the Journey of Growing Up

As I sit here in contemplating the right words to express about the essence of Vibrant Eldering, I wonder, who am I to be writing about it? I consider myself an ordinary man, shaped by life’s trials and triumphs, bearing the scars of past struggles, yet carrying an unwavering hope for the future.

It is times like this that I question my ability to articulate topics as meaningful as this. My journey has been anything but perfect—many of my wounds were self-inflicted. My hearing has never been the same since I set off a cherry bomb between two rocks I was holding—at the reckless age of eighteen.

As a student, particularly in high school, I struggled—most often neglecting my English classes and studies. To this day, my grammar remains flawed. Thankfully, modern technology now corrects most of my mistakes before my words reach you.

Despite my early shortcomings, I believe I wouldn’t be true to my heart in writing about Vibrant Eldering if I didn’t already see myself as somewhat of an example today. At eighty-four, I am blessed to share life with my amazing wife, Helene, whom I cherish deeply. I remain active—usually golfing eighteen holes twice a week—and fully engaged in our church community, where Helene and I are dedicated, regular members.

For the past three years, I have hosted a monthly caregivers’ meeting. I now co-lead a “Connecting, Sharing, and Caring” gathering at our church—an opportunity for members to come together, build meaningful connections, and support one another. Through all of that, I have been my wife’s primary, and loving Alzheimer’s disease caregiver. She was diagnosed six years ago with early stage Alzheimer’s.

Currently, I am in the final stages of publishing my first book, Reflections of the Heart, which is now available. Beyond that, I continue to write and share my essays, reaching—and hopefully inspiring—hundreds, if not thousands, of readers.

And, we each have our own way of remaining active! Intentional vibrancy takes us to a deeper level of being. It’s about consciously honoring and applying your accumulated wisdom for the better good. It’s about actively giving back.

As I write, I am humbled by the mystery of where the words come from. I can only attribute it to God’s guidance. My hope is that something within these reflections resonates with you—or another who finds greater meaning for themselves.

So, what Is Vibrant Eldering?

Vibrant Eldering is an invitation—a call to embrace the journey of becoming and being an active elder.

It takes a conscious commitment to flourish at every stage of life—to move beyond past wounds and old programming, and embrace a more vibrant way of living.

Elderhood is a sacred season—a time of wisdom, depth, and boundless possibility.

• It’s about learning from and honoring the past while living fully in the present.

• It’s about growing deeper in wisdom, not just older in years.

• It’s about stepping forward with purpose and meaning, not retreating into obscurity.

As we walk the path of Vibrant Eldering, we do so not as passive observers of life but as active participants—mentors, storytellers, way-showers, and lovers of all that is still to come. Aging is not the dimming of life’s light; it is the dawn of a new and vibrant stage in life, a new horizon!

A Shift in Mindset

Society often frames aging as a decline—a slow fading of relevance and energy. But what if, instead, we saw it as an ascent into deeper wisdom, greater connection, and a profound sense of purpose?

This is the heart of Vibrant Eldering—a mindset that embraces growing older as a dynamic, fulfilling, and sacred phase of life. It’s not merely about adding years to our lives, but about adding life to our years—a life rooted in faith, wisdom, and love.

Scripture reminds us that elderhood is not a time of retreat, but a season of spiritual depth, guidance, and service.

“Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness.”

—Proverbs 16:31

To be a vibrant elder is to wear the crown of wisdom—a role God calls us to embrace with humility and joy.

The Practices of Vibrant Eldering

A fulfilling elderhood doesn’t begin with retirement or the twilight years. It begins now—in the mindsets, choices, and habits we cultivate at every age of life.

Nurturing Physical and Spiritual Well-being

Caring for our bodies through movement, nutrition, and mindfulness.

Deepening our spiritual lives through prayer, reflection, and trust in God's plan.

Cultivating Emotional Resilience

Practicing gratitude, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Navigating life’s inevitable changes with grace and wisdom.

Remaining Intellectually Curious and Spiritually Fulfilled

Pursuing lifelong learning—through reading, discussion, travel, and meaningful experiences.

Deepening our understanding of Scripture and letting God’s Word guide our path.

Strengthening Relationships and Community

Fostering deeper bonds with loved ones and nurturing intergenerational connection.

Becoming mentors, encouraging and uplifting those who follow in our footsteps.
